What's happening right now?

Locked out

Safely, right now

  1. Wait somewhere safe and warm: a neighbour's, your car, a coffee shop.
  2. Don't force a window or the door; it only adds a repair.
  3. Have a photo ID with your address ready if you can.

Key broke in the lock

Safely, right now

  1. Leave the lock alone: pushing the piece further in makes it harder to get out.
  2. Hold on to the half you have; it helps with a new key.

Lock won't turn

Safely, right now

  1. Stop turning hard: a key that bends or snaps makes the job bigger.
  2. Skip the oil, the glue and the hot water. They make it worse.

Houses in Grey Highlands collect locks over the years: a front door from one decade, a side entry from another, a garage door that takes its own key. We rekey them all to a single key so the ring in your pocket finally gets lighter, and set up a spare that lives somewhere sensible. The same crew covers Eugenia, Feversham, Maxwell, Ravenna, Ceylon, Duncan, Epping, Fairmount, Flesherton, Hatherton, Hutchisons Corners, Kimberley, Lady Bank, McIntyre, Port Law, Rob Roy, Rock Mills, Vandeleur, Wareham, Wilcox Lake, Wodehouse, Gibraltar, Kolapore, Little Germany and Red Wing.

The fix, explained · Grey Highlands

What is the door doing?

EmergencyHome Lockout ServiceYou reached the front step with the groceries, patted every pocket twice, and the house key is simply not there.

The fix

A home lockout service is a visit whose whole purpose is to get you back inside your own home when the door is locked against you. The locksmith first confirms you have the right to be there, usually by matching photo identification to the address or seeing a lease, deed or property-management record.

EmergencyBusiness Lockout ServiceMinus eighteen with a wind, and the exterior cylinder on the shop door has frozen solid overnight after yesterday's slush.

The fix

Authority for a business is a question about the company, not just the individual at the door. An owner shows identification and something connecting them to the premises, such as the lease or the business registration.

EmergencyBroken Key ExtractionThe padlock on the shed has been stiff all summer.

The fix

Broken key extraction is the removal of a snapped key piece from a lock so it can go back to work. It is done with slim hooks and spiral extractors that slide into the keyway beside the fragment, catch the cuts in the blade and draw it out the way it went in.

EmergencyBreak-In Damage Lock RepairSomeone smashed the little window beside the door, reached in and turned the thumb-turn.

The fix

A break-in repair happens alongside a police file and an insurance claim, and a good locksmith keeps both in mind. Before any hardware is moved the damage is photographed as found: door face, edge, strike, jamb, hinges and glass.

EmergencySeized & Jammed Lock OpeningThe key slides all the way in, exactly as it has for years, and then refuses to turn in either direction.

The fix

When the cylinder is the part that has seized, the work is about cleaning rather than force. Keyways collect dust, salt spray, metal filings and residue from sprays never meant for locks, and over time the pins stop lifting cleanly.

EmergencyLost Keys — Same-Visit RekeyYou let a part-time employee go on Friday.

The fix

A missing key is also the moment a household can stop carrying four. Because a rekey sets a fresh combination in every cylinder anyway, the locksmith can set the same combination in all of them, provided they share a keyway family, so the front door, back door, garage entry and side gate open with one key.

    Understanding the safe

We ask what the safe is for, how it is opened and what has changed: a lost combination, a dead keypad, a bolt that will not retract. Each points to a different approach.

Setting it up for you again

Opening or repairing carefully. Where a combination can be reset or a keypad replaced, we do that. Where the safe must be opened without its code, we use the method that leaves it usable afterwards.

Setting it up for you again. Once it works we help you choose a new combination or code, show you how to change it later and suggest a sensible place to keep a record.

What the census means at the door

56%

Older homes. About 56% of homes in Grey Highlands were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Period hardware on older homes deserves matching parts, not a mismatched modern set. A locksmith who works among such houses keeps finishes and styles that suit them, so a repaired or replaced lock still looks like it belongs to the door.

93%

Mostly houses. Single-detached houses make up about 93% of homes in Grey Highlands (2021 Census).

In areas of single houses, the door nobody watches is the side or back entry. It often has the weakest lock on the property. Fitting a proper deadbolt and a reinforced strike there is a modest job that closes the obvious gap.

Our default for doors in Grey Highlands is to repair before replacing. A deadbolt that grinds usually needs its strike moved, not a new lock. A cylinder that fights the key often wants fresh pins and a clean. We say so, even when a replacement would be the easier sale, and when replacement really is right we explain why and show you the options in your hand.

  • A look before a verdict. We inspect the door, frame and lock before suggesting anything. Diagnosing from the driveway is how people end up with parts they did not need.

  • Two or three real choices. Where there are sensible alternatives we explain them side by side, including the option of doing less than you expected.

  • The job finished properly. Tested, aligned, cleaned up and demonstrated. We do not consider a lock done until you have turned the key yourself.

Straight answers

Advice · (249) 486-8066

Part of the key is sticking out. Can I just pull it with pliers?

If a good length shows and the plug is at its normal rest position, a firm straight pull sometimes works. The risk is pushing instead of pulling, or twisting, which drives the piece deeper and can bend a pin. If it does not come on the first gentle try, stop there and leave it for extractor tools, which grip the cuts without loading the cylinder.

How many new keys should I ask for?

Count the people who genuinely need one and add one for a known spare location: each adult, a teenager, a caregiver or regular sitter, the neighbour who checks the house, the landlord if you rent. Keys are cut on site, so the number is easy to settle during the visit. Fewer keys with names attached is the point; another can always be cut later from the code.

I just moved in. Should the new deadbolt be keyed to a new key?

It is a good moment for it. Nobody knows how many copies of a previous owner's key exist, so pinning the new bolt, and the rest of the exterior doors, to one fresh key retires all of them at once. Lock manufacturers list a move as one of the main reasons to rekey. You come away with a known number of keys, each tested in every door it is meant to open.

Should every gate on my property share one key, or is it better to keep them separate?

Either can make sense, and the choice usually comes down to who uses which gate and how often. A household that walks through the front and side gates daily generally prefers one key for both, while a gate that only a landscaper or utility worker uses is sometimes kept on its own key deliberately, so lending it out does not hand over access to everything else. The locksmith can lay out both options once every gate on the property has been looked at.
