What's happening right now?

Locked out

Safely, right now

  1. Wait somewhere safe and warm: a neighbour's, your car, a coffee shop.
  2. Don't force a window or the door; it only adds a repair.
  3. Have a photo ID with your address ready if you can.

Key broke in the lock

Safely, right now

  1. Leave the lock alone: pushing the piece further in makes it harder to get out.
  2. Hold on to the half you have; it helps with a new key.

Lock won't turn

Safely, right now

  1. Stop turning hard: a key that bends or snaps makes the job bigger.
  2. Skip the oil, the glue and the hot water. They make it worse.

Lost keys

Safely, right now

  1. Keys lost together with your address? Assume someone could use them.
  2. Don't leave a spare key anywhere outside while you wait, under the mat or elsewhere.

Sometimes the honest answer is a full lock change: a cylinder that fights every key, a handle set that no longer matches the door, a break-up where rekeying feels like half a measure. For homes across The Blue Mountains we replace the hardware, match the finish to what is already on the house and hand over new keys. This page also covers Heathcote, Griersville, Camperdown, Christie Beach, Clarksburg, Loree, Thornbury and Victoria Corners.

What is the door doing?

EmergencyHome Lockout ServiceYou reached the front step with the groceries, patted every pocket twice, and the house key is simply not there.

The fix

A home lockout service is a visit whose whole purpose is to get you back inside your own home when the door is locked against you. The locksmith first confirms you have the right to be there, usually by matching photo identification to the address or seeing a lease, deed or property-management record.

EmergencyBusiness Lockout ServiceMinus eighteen with a wind, and the exterior cylinder on the shop door has frozen solid overnight after yesterday's slush.

The fix

Authority for a business is a question about the company, not just the individual at the door. An owner shows identification and something connecting them to the premises, such as the lease or the business registration.

EmergencyBroken Key ExtractionThe padlock on the shed has been stiff all summer.

The fix

Broken key extraction is the removal of a snapped key piece from a lock so it can go back to work. It is done with slim hooks and spiral extractors that slide into the keyway beside the fragment, catch the cuts in the blade and draw it out the way it went in.

EmergencyBreak-In Damage Lock RepairSomeone smashed the little window beside the door, reached in and turned the thumb-turn.

The fix

A break-in repair happens alongside a police file and an insurance claim, and a good locksmith keeps both in mind. Before any hardware is moved the damage is photographed as found: door face, edge, strike, jamb, hinges and glass.

EmergencySeized & Jammed Lock OpeningThe key slides all the way in, exactly as it has for years, and then refuses to turn in either direction.

The fix

When the cylinder is the part that has seized, the work is about cleaning rather than force. Keyways collect dust, salt spray, metal filings and residue from sprays never meant for locks, and over time the pins stop lifting cleanly.

EmergencyLost Keys — Same-Visit RekeyYou let a part-time employee go on Friday.

The fix

A missing key is also the moment a household can stop carrying four. Because a rekey sets a fresh combination in every cylinder anyway, the locksmith can set the same combination in all of them, provided they share a keyway family, so the front door, back door, garage entry and side gate open with one key.

Opening or repairing carefully. Where a combination can be reset or a keypad replaced, we do that. Where the safe must be opened without its code, we use the method that leaves it usable afterwards.

Setting it up for you again. Once it works we help you choose a new combination or code, show you how to change it later and suggest a sensible place to keep a record.

What the census means at the door

39%

Homes of every age. About 39% of homes in The Blue Mountains were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Mixed housing ages mean the advice changes door by door. An older solid-wood entry may want a strike reinforced; a newer steel door may want its short strike screws swapped. The locksmith looks at the door in front of him rather than assuming.

80%

Mostly houses. Single-detached houses make up about 80% of homes in The Blue Mountains (2021 Census).

Detached homes are exposed to weather on every side, so exterior locks see rain, salt and freezing air directly. Choosing hardware with a good finish and a cylinder that tolerates cold, then lubricating it properly, keeps every door turning through winter.

People in The Blue Mountains should understand what is on their door. So we explain in ordinary words: what grade of hardware you have, where the weak point is, and which change would actually make a difference. You get the reasoning, not just a recommendation, and then the decision is yours. Nobody is pushed into an upgrade they did not ask about.

  • A look before a verdict. We inspect the door, frame and lock before suggesting anything. Diagnosing from the driveway is how people end up with parts they did not need.

  • Two or three real choices. Where there are sensible alternatives we explain them side by side, including the option of doing less than you expected.

  • The job finished properly. Tested, aligned, cleaned up and demonstrated. We do not consider a lock done until you have turned the key yourself.

Straight answers

Advice · (249) 486-8066

We need to open for customers. How do you sequence the visit?

Entry comes first and repairs second. Once authority is confirmed the door is opened, staff go in and start their routine, and the locksmith turns to the cause: extracting a broken key, rekeying for a lost one, re-springing a deadlatch or lifting a dropped door. Anything that can wait for a quieter hour, such as rekeying interior doors, is offered as a return visit so the shop floor is not blocked while it trades.

Why does my knob turn without moving the latch?

Most often the square hole in the hub inside the case has rounded with age, or the spindle has worn, so the knob turns a good way before it grips. Loose knob set screws produce the same slack. Less often a latch spring has broken and the latch is simply sitting inside the door. All of these are corrected during service by replacing the spindle and screws, bushing or replacing the hub, or fitting a new spring.

Can a smart lock go on a patio door, a side gate or a multipoint door?

Some can, and the locksmith will say which. Sliding patio doors use a hook or a pin rather than a deadbolt, so they take purpose-made electronic latches rather than a standard smart deadbolt. Multipoint doors, common on newer fibreglass and steel entries, lock at several points with one lever; a growing number of smart handles are built for them, and compatibility with your specific gearbox is checked first. Gates take weather-rated keypad locks designed for outdoor posts.

Does road salt or winter weather affect these small locks?

It does. Outdoor cam locks sit exposed to spray, salt, and repeated freezing all winter, which corrodes the small internal parts faster than indoor hardware and can leave a keyway gritty or a cylinder stiff well before it actually fails. Whatever lubricant that cylinder's own maker specifies, used once or twice a year, helps a replacement lock last through more winters.
