Read this before you buy a lock

These are notes, not lectures. Each one takes something people often get wrong about locks and keys, explains it in a paragraph or two, and leaves you better placed to decide what your doors need and what they can happily do without.

Will opening the door damage my lock?

In most residential lockouts the lock is untouched. Picking, decoding and latch tools operate the mechanism the same way your key does, so there is nothing to repair afterwards. A drill only appears when a cylinder is seized, plugged by a snapped key or engineered against picking, and you hear about that before it starts. Should it come to that, replacement hardware goes on before the locksmith leaves so you lock up normally that evening. Home Lockout Service

What is a restricted keyway and is it worth having for a business?

A restricted or patented keyway is one whose blanks are supplied only through the manufacturer's authorised channels, so duplication is controlled rather than available at an ordinary counter, though the exact authorisation step varies by program and is not always a signed letter. For a company with staff turnover, cleaners and contractors, it means the keys in circulation are far easier to track. It can be introduced during a rekey, on the exterior doors only or across the whole premises, and works alongside a key register. Business Lockout Service

Why did my key break at all?

Often fatigue, though not the only cause. A brass blade is weakest where the deepest cut leaves the least metal, and thousands of turns can slowly work a crack into that spot. Then one morning something asks more of it: a frozen cylinder, a bolt binding in a swollen door, grit in the keyway, or turning before the key was fully in. A bent, worn or poorly cut key can also fail on its own, with no such trigger. The lock is inspected afterwards to find which applied. Broken Key Extraction

Is a smart lock a good replacement after a break-in?

It can be, with the same reinforcement behind it. A keypad or app-controlled deadbolt eases the problem of stolen keys, since codes are changed in seconds and a lost phone is unpaired rather than rekeyed. Its bolt still needs a boxed strike and long screws, because the frame is what failed; a keyed override should be rekeyed too, with any spare left with a trusted person, not hidden outside; a cylinder-free model needs no override key. Choose one with a full-throw bolt and fit it to a reinforced door edge. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

How long does a rekeying visit take?

It scales with the number of cylinders and how many need attention beyond pinning. A single deadbolt is a short bench job; a whole house with five or six exterior cylinders, a couple of swaps for mismatched keyways and a set of spares to cut and test takes a good deal longer. Tell the locksmith how many doors you want included when you book, and the visit can be planned realistically rather than guessed at. Lock Rekeying

Does the finish of the deadbolt matter beyond looks?

It does on an exposed door. Winter salt spray, summer sun and humid air all work on the outside trim, and residential deadbolts carry a finish grade that reflects how well the coating resists them. A lifetime or PVD-style finish stays bright longer on a south-facing or roadside door, while a sheltered porch door can carry any finish you like. Matching the knob or lever below is mostly a matter of taste. Deadbolt Installation

Will a new lock fit the holes already in my door?

Usually, yes. Most residential doors are prepared to standard sizes, a 54 millimetre cross bore and a backset of 60 or 70 millimetres, and most modern hardware adjusts between those backsets. The locksmith measures before choosing, so the new lock is matched to the door rather than the other way around. Where an older mortise lock or an unusual bore is found, filler plates, extension kits or a carefully jigged new bore bring the door to standard. Lock Replacement & Upgrade

Can a modern cylinder be fitted to my old mortise lock?

Often, on cases that already take a threaded cylinder. Mortise cylinders are made in standard thread sizes and lengths with different cam shapes, and a new one is selected to match the case and the door thickness. That gives you keys cut on a machine and the option of keying the door alike with the rest of the house. A bit-key case has no cylinder to swap; its keys are made on the bench instead. Should I change my safe's combination even if it still opens fine?

It depends on who still knows the old one. If a bookkeeper, manager or previous owner who had the combination is no longer with the business, resetting it closes that gap even though nothing about the lock itself has failed. A safe that only the current staff have ever known the code to generally does not need changing on that basis alone. Safe Opening & Combination Change

Can an existing safe be bolted down after years of sitting loose?

In most cases, yes. The floor or wall behind it is checked the same way as for a new installation, anchor points on the safe itself are located, and hardware suited to that surface is fitted without needing to move the unit far from where it already sits. An older safe occasionally has anchor holes that were never used, which makes this part of the job simpler than starting from scratch. Safe Installation & Servicing

Why does the locksmith care so much about the strike plate?

Because that is where a kicked door fails. The bolt is strong, but it sits in a pocket in the jamb held by a thin plate and short screws, and a boot splits the wood around it. A reinforced strike or box strike fastened with three-inch screws into the wall framing spreads the blow along the frame. It is the least visible part of the upgrade and often the one that does the most. High Security Locks

Can the aluminum storefront door on our unit be rekeyed?

Yes. The narrow stile of a storefront door houses a screw-in mortise cylinder secured from the edge, and it unthreads, is repinned and screws back in like any other. What the locksmith watches is the cam: it has to suit the hook or deadbolt mechanism inside the door and sit at the correct depth, or the bolt throws short. Weather-facing cylinders showing salt wear are pointed out so you can decide on replacement. Commercial Rekeying

What happens if a department splits or a business reorganizes?

The existing chart is the starting point rather than a blank page. Doors that move to a new department are reassigned within the existing hierarchy where the cylinders and platform allow it, and only the affected levels are touched. A reorganization is usually an adjustment to the record, not a reason to rebuild the whole system from the ground up. Master Key System Design

Can we see a log of who entered and when?

Yes. The controller keeps a running record of which credential was presented at which door and when, available to the administrator at any time, not only after an incident. It can be checked for a specific door, date, or credential, which is useful for everyday questions as much as investigating something unusual, though it identifies the credential used rather than confirming who was physically holding it. Access Control Installation

How is occupant load actually counted for this decision?

Occupant load is calculated from the floor area and the intended use of the room, using published factors for that occupancy type, rather than a headcount taken on a busy night. A building official or a locksmith familiar with the calculation can work through it for a specific room, and the result is what decides whether the exit doors serving that room need a releasing device. My keys are in the trunk. Do you have to open the trunk lock?

Almost never. Where the cabin has a usable path, it is opened first and the trunk released from inside using the release lever or the fold-down rear seat; the glowing emergency handle is mounted inside the trunk itself for a trapped occupant, and some vehicles have no cabin release at all. The lid is never forced. If the car has a valet setting that isolates the trunk, the trunk cylinder is decoded and turned like a door cylinder, again without marks. Car Lockout Service

What is the difference between adding a spare and replacing all keys?

Adding a spare uses an existing working key as the reference: the new blade is cut and checked against it, and the immobilizer is asked to accept one more key alongside the old. Replacing all keys starts with nothing: the lock is decoded for a blade, and the immobilizer is reset to forget every previous key before new ones are stored. The second job is longer and sometimes needs manufacturer data, one more reason to keep a spare. Car Key Replacement

Why does the VIN matter for making a spare key?

The VIN identifies the exact immobilizer generation and lock system your particular vehicle left the factory with, which decides whether the chip can be copied directly or needs to be freshly coded through the diagnostic port, and which blank and blade profile are correct. Two cars that look identical from the outside can use different systems a model year apart, so the VIN removes the guesswork. Spare Car Key Duplication

What does testing remote start or passive entry actually involve?

Each function the vehicle offers is tried in person once the fob is registered: trying whatever passive-entry action that vehicle actually needs, approach alone, or a handle touch, grip or button press, pressing the remote start button and confirming the engine turns over, and checking that the vehicle re-locks or shuts down the way it is meant to. Nothing is assumed to work simply because the fob was accepted by the vehicle's memory. Key Fob Programming
